My experience to date with Solid Run's LX2160 Honeycomb workstation

Finally, a replacement for the macchiatobin

After about 2 years of good, reliable use I finally got my LX2160 board from Solid Run with the intention to replace my macchiatobin with it. I got a pretty good deal on it since I ordered the board early on. This board has much higher end specs, with 16 A72 cores and twice the PCIE lanes, as well as the capability to use an M.2 drive. This board has a lot of potential.

Poor software support as of yet, but it is promising.

As of yet the only support there is, is this custom kernel’ed version of Ubuntu that SolidRun is distributing and it detects my AMD GPU that I got for this board, but the computer freezes after any meaningful use. I somehow managed to rig it so that it used CPU rendering, but this does not stop the computer from booting. I hear there are multiple efforts to get mainline linux kernel support for this board, that cannot come soon enough because once that lands and I can use EDK2 to boot, this is going to be an amazing workstation. I can already compile Godot from source in less than 5 minutes, and the Linux kernel takes less than 15 minutes to build from source.

The boot situation

Solid Run’s custom image mentioned earlier uses u-boot to initialize everything, but thankfully I have been able to compile their UEFI (edk2) for the board, and have been able to boot mainline ubuntu (does not pick up on the graphics card), Fedora Rawhide gets a kernel panic upon attempting to boot. I have read multiple places however that mainline support is indeed coming to LX2160, so I have some time to wait further until I can use this in the full capacity that I used the macchiatobin in.
