The Case for Patriotism

July 20, 2018 - 3 minutes

First of all, what do I mean by Patriotism?

I follow the Orwellian concept of patriotism, that being,

By ‘patriotism’ I mean devotion to a particular place and a particular way of life, which one believes to be the best in the world but has no wish to force on other people. Patriotism is of its nature defensive, both militarily and culturally.

Often times, especially among the far left, the term “patriot” or “patriotism” is simply rejected as another term for nationalism, which is a bourgeois right wing phenomena. They forget things like the USSR referring to World War II as the Great Patriotic War, the old left at least has always been patriotic in spirit, as all revolutionary movements should be. No patriot should ever be a nationalist!

Why the left needs Patriots

At the time of this writing, the left represents only upper middle class interests. They have decided that the conservative working class are the actual enemy and have unwittingly allied themselves with the bourgeoisie. You know this is the case when the bourgeois media can speak positively of socialists such as Alexandria Cortez, or Bernie Sanders with a positive tone of voice, and they speak of traditional values and the conservative working class with utter disdain. This isn’t a call to abandon the cause of socialism, but I urge any of my far left readers to question which class you hold your loyalties to? How can you expect to liberate a group of people you only feel apathy and disdain for?

Patriots both historically and today have opposed ruling class interests, it’s the patriots of 1776 who armed the working class, and created the world’s first secular republic with Free Speech, and a comprehensive Bill of Rights. Why should we abandon the cause of patriotism? To our own people? Most of the so called far left cite being internationalist, of which I would say I am internationalist. I only want friendship and brotherhood between nations, and to never have a nation under the rule of another.

Given the definition of patriotism I am running with, almost everyone should be a patriot. I would ask the rest of the far left, if you cannot show your community that you care for them and your way of life, how do you ever expect them to side with you? If you do not care about your way of life being destroyed, if you do not care about national sovereignity, then you aren’t an internationalist, you are playing into the hands of the globalist neo liberal bourgeoisie!

One of the biggest reasons the United States having such a weak labor movement isn’t because of conservatives, it’s because we have had a constant influx of cheap immigrant labor; and it’s almost impossible or organize the masses when they can’t even speak the same language, or don’t have any cultural cohesion. This constant destruction of our way of life makes our communities very vulnerable to divide and conquer strategies. This comes from the mere fact that we cannot commune with others, better than we can with our own countrymen. Pride in one’s community and way of life, patriotism, is healthy and should be encouraged by the far left. No one wants to listen to a person who hates their community, no matter how correct your Marxist critique of capitalism is. And when these so called internationalists disparage other nations, it only shows the real nationalists they really are.

As a part of the far left we should seek to liberate our communities from bourgeois oppression!
